Glamorous Sikh Resort Wedding

Sital & Sunny

We are in awe of this glamorous Sikh wedding on the spectacular island of Phuket. Sital and Sunny’s five-day elaborate wedding festivities consisted of multiple events, ranging from relaxed outdoor beach parties to formal black-tie soirees. Over 400 guests were treated to a party-filled week complete with Bollywood entertainment, fireworks, and live music, while also being pampered with all the luxuries of a five-star resort. Each event had its own theme where the decor, outfits, entertainment, and food came together seamlessly to provide a unique atmosphere for the guests. The bride and groom stole the show, however, with impeccably coordinated outfits by some of our favorite designers such as Anita DongreManish Malhotra and Sabyasachi.

Planning a destination wedding in a short amount of time is no easy feat, but the stunning bride, Sital shares with us the details of her wedding festivities and some very helpful tips for brides-to-be. About The Couple

How did we meet?

Sunny and I first met and got to know each other through Facebook.

How we are as a couple?

Quirky and complete opposites! I love everything Bollywood and Sunny cannot speak a word of “Indian” as he calls it. We both love food though.

How he proposed?

The proposal was quite unexpected. One day when we were together, Sunny asked me to give his dog Monte, a biscuit. As I went to give Monte the treat, I saw a beautiful ring attached to his collar and started crying immediately. Once I had calmed down, Sunny asked me to marry him and I, of course, said yes!

What marriage means to us?

Marriage is a lifelong commitment to loving, caring and being there for each other while having heaps of fun.

The Details

Wedding Planning

PLANNING: We took 10 months to plan the wedding but had to change our wedding planners two months before the the big day. We had only purchased our outfits and booked the venue by this stage, so we had to decide on the decor, catering, events, wedding stationery and entertainment all in a short period of time, which was extremely stressful. We used Magnificence Events as our wedding planners and Oriental Events provided the decor.

PHOTOGRAPHY & CINEMATOGRAPHY: We used Colomono Studio as they have so much experience in their field and are amazing to deal with.

WEDDING SHOPPING: We did all our shopping in Delhi, over 2 weeks in February, and made another trip in May to collect the altered outfits. I had made a list of designer stores I wanted to visit prior to going to India, and since most of them were located in South Delhi, we stayed in that area for convenience. This forward planning was useful and made the wedding shopping experience a lot more efficient.

Wedding Events

We held our wedding events in June 2015 at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa in Phuket, Thailand. We chose to have our events at the various venues within the resort to make life easier for us and all our guests. The itinerary of events was:

  1. Welcome Dinner – Friday PM, Ginja Taste Restaurant at JW Marriott, 400 guests.
  2. Mehendi – Saturday AM, Andaman Grill at JW Marriott, 420 guests.
  3. Milni and Sangeet – Saturday PM, Ballroom at JW Marriott, 420 guests.
  4. Wedding Ceremony & Soiree – Sunday PM, Singh Sabha Gurdwara, 420 guests.
  5. Reception – Monday PM, Ballroom at JW JW Marriott, 400 guests.

Guest Services

We organized some really useful services for our guests during their stay at the JW Marriott Resort and Spa, so they could relax and have fun during the wedding festivities.

  • Catering: While the catering at all the events was amazing, I especially loved the late-night snacks provided for those of us who partied till the early hours of the morning.
  • Beauty services: We organized a hair and makeup salon at the resort for all our guests, with 14 stylists that were flown in from Bangkok. We also provided party slippers at every event for women in heels.
  • Wedding hampers: We provided wedding hampers to all our guests when they arrived, complete with hangover kits.
  • Concierge service: The resort provided a 24-hour help desk dedicated to our guests.
  • Transport: There were four standby vans to transport guests between the wedding event venues and their rooms.

Welcome Dinner

DECOR: By Magnificence Events and Oriental Events. We went with a ‘Sounds of the Sunset’ theme as it was an outdoor beach party, which began at dusk. The decor incorporated warm, earthy colors and, because we were in Thailand, the event space had a ‘Buddha Bar’ feel.

UNIQUE DETAILS: We had a saxophonist to entertain the guests and fireworks to start the celebrations with a bang!

SITAL’S OUTFIT: I wanted something quirky and different, which I was able to find online on Pernia’s Popup Shop. I chose a crop top and fitted pants from SVA Couture because I was wearing lehengas for all the other wedding events.

JEWELLERY: I wore statement earrings by Thai Gems.

SHOES: I wore my sister’s black wedges.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Ablaze by Simran did my hair and makeup for all the wedding events. She is by far the best makeup artist around and matched all my looks with my outfits appropriately.

SUNNY’S OUTFIT: Sunny designed his own outfit and got it tailor-made by Damanino in Bangkok. He also wore loafers by Tod’s to complete the look.

This was another outdoor party by the beach, but this time we constructed a huge marquee.

DECOR: By Magnificence Events and Oriental Events. The theme of the event was ‘Whimsical Wonderland’, and I wanted the decor to be really colorful, quirky and reminiscent of Punjab. We had hanging origami, teapots, orchids, pompoms, and manjis as well as lovely family dances. This event was a true expression of me and how I think a lot of people view me.

UNIQUE DETAILS: We gave mirrored bags from Etsy and bindis.

SITAL’S OUTFIT: I wanted something light, colorful and bright for the Mehendi as I knew it was going to be hot in Phuket and did not want my outfit to weigh me down. I chose a green, gold and yellow lehenga by Anita Dongre, which was perfect as it also matched the gold set that I wore to the event.

JEWELLERY: I wore a gold set, which we bought from Bholasons Jewellers in Karolbagh, Delhi.

SHOES: I wore pink heels by Christian Louboutin.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Ablaze by Simran.

MEHENDI ARTIST: I got my mehndi done by the very talented, Kamaljeet Kanjan from Mumbai. He was absolutely amazing, and I loved the intricate design.

SUNNY’S OUTFIT: Tailor-made Jodhpuri pants from Rohit & Abhishek with a Sabyasachi vest. His shoes were also by Sabyasachi.

Milni & Sangeet

DECOR: By Magnificence Events and Oriental Events. Our wedding planners, Magnificence Events suggested a ‘Mehfil-e-Mystique’ theme as we were going have a surprise act from Bollywood. The ballroom looked beautiful with hints of maroon and green, set amongst deep purple drapes and flowers.

UNIQUE DETAILS: The Meet Brothers, famous for producing the Bollywood song ‘Chittiyan Kalaiyan’ performed on the night amongst other amazing performances by friends and family.

SITAL’S OUTFIT: I wore a light pink and green lehenga by Sabyasachi. I instantly fell in love with the outfit, and it perfectly matched a polki set that I had bought for the event.

JEWELLERY: A polki set from Hazoorilal.

SHOES: I wore heels by Christian Louboutin.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Ablaze by Simran.

SUNNY’S OUTFIT: Sunny wore a gold bandhgala suit by Sabyasachi.

Wedding Ceremony

We had a traditional Sikh wedding at the local Gurdwara in Phuket. As we could not accommodate all our guests in the Gurdwara, we organized a wedding soiree for those who stayed back at the hotel, where the wedding ceremony was broadcasted live on a local TV station. The highlight for me was definitely the pheras we took together at the Gurdwara.

SITAL’S OUTFIT: I wore a bright red Manish Malhotra Anarkali suit for the wedding ceremony. I got a thick mirrored border added on to the dupatta, which made the outfit look a little more modern.

JEWELLERY: I went for a traditional Punjabi look with polki jewellery, nose ring and a large maang tika from Punjab Jewellers and bangles from Bholasons Jewellers in Karolbagh, Delhi.

SHOES: Punjabi juttis from Karol Bagh, Delhi.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Ablaze by Simran.

SUNNY’S OUTFIT: Sunny wore a sherwani by Manish Malhotra, matched with shoes by Sabyasachi.

DECOR: By Magnificence Events and Oriental Events. The theme of the night was ‘Vintage Vogue’ and was inspired totally by Sunny and his lifestyle. Sunny loves the finer things in life, which was evident at the black-tie reception with a single malt bar, in a dim setting. We had tuxedo napkins, terracotta accents and lush greenery for our decor.

UNIQUE DETAILS: The French band, Paris House Addict performed on the night with their amazing violinist and saxophonist. We also had a harpist to welcome the guests as they made their way into the ballroom. The highlights for me were the speeches by friends and family, and the wedding highlights video.

SITAL’S OUTFIT: I wore a gorgeous Manish Malhotra lehenga with mirror work and bright red flowers on it. The lehenga weighed close to 20 kilograms, but I still decided to wear it because it was so beautiful.

JEWELLERY: I wore a diamond and emerald set by Thai Gems.

SHOES: I wore heels by Charlotte Olympia.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Ablaze by Simran.

SUNNY’S OUTFIT: Sunny wore a 3 piece tuxedo, which was tailor-made by Damanino. He completed his look with shoes by Dolce & Gabbana.
