About The Couple
How They Met
Karen met Aakash at NYU's South Asian Students Organization meeting where he was interviewing her to be on the club's board. Little did she know that he only voted for her because he found her cute. In the following months, they ran into each other quite a lot of times because of their mutual friends who made excuses to get them together.
After running into each other yet again but, on New Year's Eve, they talked on phone and texted for hours. In February 2011, Karen finally asked Aakash out for a date and after 8 years of knowing each other and four years of long-distance love he finally proposed to her.
How They Are Together
The bride quotes, "most people say that we balance each other out really well. I’m pretty loud and bold and Aakash is very polite and shy. All in all, we are a couple that works really hard, but also loves to travel, explore and try new things."
Aakash proposed to Karen at the Washington Square Park (where they first met) when they were visiting NYC. While they were on a run working out, he slowed down right by the fountain in the square and asked her to marry him.
Shot at picturesque locations, Aakash & Karen's shoot is as dreamy as one can imagine. For their pre-wedding, the couple slipped into gorgeous Anita Dongre outfits and the photos look every bit aesthetic.
Hosted at the Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua the wedding was an intimate affair with the couple's family and closest friends. While the planners Eventures helped bring the couple's vision to life along with the decorators Butterfly Event Styling, her MUA & stylist Susmita Patel created all their wedding looks that they've always dreamt of. Framing the wedding shenanigans in the prettiest possible ways, photographer Axioo Bali and cinematographer Pacific Pictures left us all enchanted with the surreal wedding photos and videos.
A Rajasthani themed event with vibrant colors and zesty vibes, it was the perfect vivacious affair to officially commence the wedding celebrations. While the mehndi was an outdoor beachside ceremony under canopies, the sangeet was hosted indoors after sunset for the dance performances. Colorful drapes and seating areas, decked up thela stalls, a truck bar, rickshaw photo booth, and peppy floral decor marked the venue for the function.
For the ceremony, Karen slipped into a jazzy Papa Don't Preach top-skirt ensemble with a jacket. The electric blue outfit was replete with sequin and mirror embellishments which she paired up with statement earrings, a floral decked up bun and a bold lip.
Aakash, whereas, donned a white kurta set with a blue thread embroidered nehru jacket from Pawan & Pranav.
The Wedding Ceremony
The Day wedding was an elegant riot of flowers ornamenting the place breathtakingly. The all floral mandap done in blush pink, white and red flowers with a foliage ceiling and a floral chandelier, stood out looking so scenic against the oceanic backdrop. Whereas, wooden boxes decorated with similar floral arrangements marked the aisle.
Frolicking about in the famous Sabyasachi lehenga, Karen fabulously looked like a million bucks and further bedazzled us by pairing up her ensemble with a royal collar necklace and rani haar set. With subtle makeup and natural bridal radiance, Karen unquestionably stole hearts.
Aakash on the other hand, wore a custom made raw silk ivory sherwani done in subtle pastel-hued florals and teamed it up with a pastel-hued safa.
After her bridesmaids, Karen's elder brother walked her down the aisle. The song started off with 'Tere Bina' and later cut to 'Kala Chashma' to which they put on their sunglasses and danced down the aisle to the mandap.
Bridal Party Look
Karen's bridesmaids wore matching pink saris with gold blouses which were custom made from Sushma Creations in Juhu, Mumbai. They all wore their hair half open and set that perfect dark-light contrast with the bride.
The Wedding Dinner
The wedding was subsequently followed by a classic beach lawn dinner that culminated with fireworks and local Balinese dancers. Plush white tablescapes with gorgeous florals under a string-bulb ceiling made up for elegant and lit decor.
For the dinner, Karen slipped into a chic Payal Singhal top and skirt ensemble replete with palm leave motifs all over and an embellished tulle drape accentuating the top. Classic poker-straight hair and earrings completed her look stunningly.
Aakash suited himself with a cream kurta set with a pistachio green bandi from Anita Dongre.
Brunch Pool Party & Reception
Wanting to end the week with a big party, the next day kicked off with a pool party brunch with music, relaxing massages by the pool and hookah. Since Aakash and Karen love traveling together, their reception's theme was centered around the same. Hot air balloons and cascading fairy lights marked the entire ceiling of the venue.
An all foliage wall highlighted with pastel-hued florals and the couple's names as monograms made for an uber tropical backdrop for the stage while huge floral vase centerpieces marked the tables settings. To add a personalized touch further, each table featured a city that the couple had visited together along with a photo of them from that place.
Aakash and Karen's first dance was on an electric violin cover of 'Adventure of a Lifetime'. This song is specifically special to them because they love to travel around the world together and Coldplay is their favorite band.
Tips from Karen
- Don’t worry about what anyone else wants or thinks, except for you and your husband-to-be. You’ll hear a lot of opinions, but it’s you and your fiance’s moment.
- You don’t expect this but you oftentimes feel alone during your wedding. All your family and friends are getting ready for the events, and you’re left with your make up artist and wedding planning team. As you consider selecting vendors, the vendors should be talented but more importantly, they should be friendly and down to earth.
- Take a moment at each event with your husband-to-be and look at what’s happening. It’s important to take note of the fact that all the people around you are there because they love you and are celebrating your love.
