Blue Themed DIY Indian Engagement

Preet & Hemant

Snapshot

Stylish and chic are the two words that we would use to describe Preet and Hemant’s gorgeous engagement party. From the coordinated outfits to the stylish décor and the adorable party favours, every aspect of this engagement party was well thought out and brilliantly executed. We especially loved the giant Jenga game for guests to enjoy. The engagement party was captured candidly by Chris A James Photography.

The couple is officially set to get married next month and we cannot wait to see what other unique ideas they come up with. We spoke to the beautiful bride to be Preet, who was very kind in sharing with us some of the intimate details of the night as well as some helpful tips for planning an engagement party.

About The Couple

How we met

At a birthday party for Hemant’s cousin.

How we are as a couple

Hemant and I are a fun and easy going couple who enjoy each other’s company above all else. Our relationship is based on the fundamental values of respect, affection and empathy. We both ensure that we take an active interest in each other’s lives.

Even though our interests and hobbies are somewhat different, we love challenging each other to try new experiences together.

The proposal

We were kayaking to a small private beach near Manly, where Hemant popped the question followed by a surprise picnic with friends.

What marriage means to us

For us marriage is synonymous with team. It is about having the support of someone that guides you through the thick and thin and always cheers you on.

The Details

Planning

PLANNING: We officially started planning for the engagement party right after the proposal. It took us approximately one month to bring it all together – and our key vision throughout was to create a night that maximized the fun we could have with our close family and friends.

I highly recommend that couples make the engagement party to their taste, as you will find that Indian weddings generally involve the collaboration of decisions and viewpoints from the wider extended family. Thus, if you really want to try something new or different, the engagement party is the best opportunity.

THEME: We both took inspiration from the beach (as this is where Hemant proposed) and decided to go with a “touch of blue” as our key theme.

The Party

VENUE: We used Hemant’s backyard to host this event, as it was intimate and fully customizable to our tastes and needs. The set-up included a marquee with a mixture of both cocktail and dining tables, with one main dessert table for our guests to enjoy.

CATERING: Throughout the night we provided canapés for our guests, with a standard Indian feast for dinner (all of the catering was done by Castle Taj). There was a dedicated dessert table prepared by my lovely high-school friend Naureen.

HIGHLIGHTS: We felt blessed to have our close family and friends perform some dance numbers for us on the night, definitely one of the highlights for Hemant and I. Jasdeep Kang, our DJ for the night, ensured the party kicked on well into the night!

Decor & Unique Details

DECOR: We decorated with DIY items to go with our blue and white beach theme. We used baubles from eBay, bottles that I had at home, fairy lights and flowers to decorate the marquee and the backyard. My dad was a total sweetheart and went to the flower markets two days before to pick up all the floral arrangements for our big night.

UNIQUE DETAILS: We incorporated some fun DIY ideas into our event, which definitely added that personal touch:

  • A Giant Jenga Game: The feature of our engagement party was definitely the giant Jenga set we purchased from eBay. Safe to say it was enjoyed by all our guests!
  • Party Favours: For our party favours we decided to go with something small and cute, giving each guest a small box of candy popcorn with the following quote “Hemant popped the question, Preet said yes”. We made these favours ourselves with the popcorn from Costco, boxes from eBay and stickers from Etsy
  • Photobooth Signage: A DIY photobooth signage for guest photos.
  • A Personalised Mini Bar: We created two customised cocktails for our guests to enjoy: “the He-man” and “the Preet-ini”.

The Look

PREET'S OUTFIT: I opted for a white maxi dress with slits by Something Nice.

JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES: I decided to keep my jewellery simple, with an elegant pair of Swarovski earrings and my beautiful engagement ring of course! Given that it was summer, I also opted for a floral headpiece from Lovisa to complete my look.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Both my hair and makeup were done by the lovely team at Gather and Stitch Beauty.

HEMANT'S OUTFIT: The navy blue suit was from Politix which he paired with a crisp white shirt from InStitchu. He added a polka dot bow tie from Myer to complete the look.
