Bohemian Chic Indian Beach Wedding
Aastha & Karan
My favorite moment from the wedding…
The pheras at the wedding was my most favorite moment. The timing was perfect with the sunset in the background and I had my close family and friends around. It was really special. It was the moment I actually felt like I was getting married.
I cried when…
The only time I got teary was during kanyadaan. I saw my father crying and I got emotional. It was a pretty heavy moment.
My wedding style was…
I planned all the wedding details myself so it was about having a lot of fun. We had a lot of friends and family coming from interstate and overseas, so my main aim was to make sure they had a very easy, fun and stress-free experience. We wanted everyone to have lots of fun drinking and dancing.
Most valuable advice for future brides
It's very easy to get carried away with lot of ideas and opinions of other people. My advice would be to make sure you go with what you want to do. It's your day. You have to personally enjoy it. Don't let the details of the wedding stress you out. This is a once in a lifetime experience and you want to make sure you remember it for the rest of your life. Secondly, I highly recommend delegating your work to family and friends. Don’t be shy - they want to help during this time, so make the most of it.
About The Couple
How we met
I'm a celebrity stylist with my own fashion consultancy (Wardrobist Consultancy) and Karan works for Microsoft in the same building. There is a cafe right under our building where we first saw each other. We made eye contact, and I suppose there was a spark. We didn't talk then, but the next day, we bumped into each other again at the cafe and ended up talking. We hit it off and started dating a few days later. We had been dating for three years before we chose to get married.
We went away to Goa for a friend's wedding which happened to fall over Valentines Day in 2016. We were hanging out at the beach with his sister and his friends when he asked to go for a walk to the beach. Just when the sun was setting, he proposed out of the blue. It was completely unexpected, but it was perfect.
Being married is
Getting married has been a very natural process for us. We moved in together and it's a really nice feeling to come home to someone and sharing your whole self with them. It's like marrying your best friend.
PLANNING: I did all the planning myself. I worked closely with the wedding suppliers to work through the details and bring our wedding vision to life. We wanted to make sure everyone had a stress free experience, with lots of fun, drinking, and dancing.
WEDDING SHOPPING: Being a fashion and celebrity stylist (Aastha is the Founder at Wardrobist Consultancy, the leading fashion consultancy in India) so I was very clear about all of my wedding looks. I wanted my outfits to look elegant and suit my easy, casual and minimalist style. Most importantly, I wanted the outfits to be comfortable and wearable even after the wedding. Fortunately, through my work, I have been blessed to be associated with the best designers in the industry so it was very easy to bring my ideas to life.
We saw a lot of invitation cards but nothing suited our minimalistic style. I worked with Saurabh from Inviluxe to customize one of the card sets. They turned out beautifully.
Our wedding was held over a few days at the end of November 2016 in Mumbai:
The Mehendi was held at my home in Mumbai. It was a very private affair with close family and friends followed by a small cocktail at home in evening.
DECOR: We kept the decor very simple and homely with marigold flower strings.
AASTHA'S OUTFIT: I wore a pink sharara by Kolkata designer Nupur Kanoi. It was super comfortable and easy to move around in as I was getting my henna done.
JEWELRY: I wore my mother's jewelry to complement the outfit.
HAIR & MAKEUP: I wanted a very simple makeup look for my Mehendi and decided to do it myself.
HENNA ARTIST: Kashmeera Dedhia.
KARAN'S OUTFIT: He wore a simple kurta set.
Sangeet & Cocktail
We had a Sangeet & Cocktail event by the beach at Kino Cottage in Versova. It was prefect for enjoying relaxed and breezy sundowners. It was an opportunity for our guests from overseas and interstate to meet and mingle with each other.
DECOR: The decor was very dreamy with pastel colored lanterns and flowers hung from a feature tree. We wanted to keep everything light and subtle. Jean Pereira provided the decor.
AASTHA'S OUTFIT: My very close friend and designer, Nikhil Thampi made a stunning outfit for me. I knew I wanted to wear something comfortable but didn't want to wear a lehenga as I knew I would be running around the venue looking at all the details. He put together a beautiful vibrant one shoulder crop top with flared high-waisted pants with beautiful hand embroidery that matched the whimsical theme of the event. He added a dupatta to add a traditional element to the look.
JEWELRY: I kept it quite minimal with delicate gold Suhani Pittie earrings and a sleek haath phool.
HAIR & MAKEUP: Billi Manik from Out Of The Box did my hair and makeup. Again, we keept it very minimalist with shimmery eyes and beachy waves which looked amazing.
KARAN'S OUTFIT: He also wanted something easy going that he could easily dance in. He wore a kurta set with bandi from Anita Dongre.
The Wedding Ceremony was held at Hotel Sea Princess, Juhu Beach. We wanted to keep the event small and intimate - only 100 of our closest family and friends were present. The pheras took place outdoors by the pool with the beach as the backdrop. It was a simple affair, starting at 4pm and continuing over sunset with soft music in the background. It was perfect.
DECOR: We had a traditional but elegant setup with beautiful white rajnigandhas and yellow marigold flowers adorning the mandap and the surrounds. Jean Pereira and National Decorators brought my vision to life perfectly.
AASTHA'S OUTFIT: I wore a gorgeous orange Anita Dongre lehenga. I always knew I wanted to wear an orange lehenga for my wedding and knew it was the one ever since I saw it on the runway in Delhi. The team at Anita Dongre did a fabulous job helping me customize the lehenga. It was so light and comfortable that I could dance the night away.
JEWELRY: I matched the outfit with jewelry from Pinkcity by Anita Dongre. Because it was a day event, I wanted to keep it minimal.
HAIR & MAKEUP: A simple bun and minimalist makeup by Billi Manik from Out Of The Box.
The Reception was held at Trilogy Nightclub at Hotel Sea Princess with over 250 guests attending. We didn't want a typical reception where we would stand on stage and have our guests meet us. We wanted everyone to have a fun time and dance the night away with it.
DECOR: Again, we wanted to keep it minimal, modern and fresh given it was a nightclub. I wanted to make sure the venue did not end up looking dark and dingy, like a typical nightclub. I worked with D. Karmali & Co. to use flowers, soft lights and photo booths to create an uplifting, Gatsby-esque vibe.
AASTHA'S OUTFIT: I always wanted to wear Sabyasachi at my wedding - he's one of my favorite designers. I had briefed him that I wanted something that I could dance in easily as well as wear it at different occasions after my Reception. He designed a stunning deep red high-waisted skirt with a matching crop top and a long embellished jacket. It was modern with traditional work - his work is always a piece of art. I know I can wear this piece in five different ways.
JEWELRY: I wore jewelry from TBZ - The Original to match my glamorous look.
HAIR & MAKEUP: Billi Manik from Out Of The Box.
KARAN'S OUTFIT: He wore a three-piece blue suit by Rahul Agasti that perfectly complemented my deep red outfit. He was able to take off his jacket and dance the night away.
