Romantic Indian Palace Wedding

Puja & Adityo

Puja and Adityo’s dreamy destination wedding in Udaipur, set in a rustic palace perched high among the Aravalli mountains, is full of beauty, love, and culture. With breathtaking views of Lake Pichola and the city of romance, Udaipur, there couldn’t be a more perfect backdrop to celebrate the coming together of two friends and lovers as they begin the next chapter of their journey together.

Organized in less than six months, we loved Puja and Adityo’s simple and minimalist approach to their wedding planning. With only 50 guests at the two-day event, the celebrations started with the Mehendi where guests were treated to traditional Rajasthani performances and mouth-watering local delicacies as they danced the night away under the moonlight. The Wedding Ceremony was ethereal with the rituals taking place in the open air on the highest rooftop of the palace and overlooking the stunning city of Udaipur. The highlight, of course, was the bride and groom and their impeccable style and curated looks. Puja looked every bit the Modern Rajasthani Princess at the wedding in her pearl-white Anita Dongre lehenga and Kundan jewelry set including a statement multi-stranded matha patti. Luckily for us, photographers One for the Book beautifully captured the romance and beauty with stunning images that will give us plenty to daydream about! P.S. Look out for the breathtaking post-wedding photoshoot in Jaipur!

We spoke with Puja to understand her vision for the wedding and her top tips for brides wanting to have a stress-free destination wedding.

About The Couple

How we met

Adityo and I met in high school and quickly became best friends. As our friendship evolved, so did our feelings for one another. After spending some time as a couple, we knew we wanted to get married and pursue a lifetime of happiness in each other’s company.

How we are as a couple

We almost never disagree. Most of our friends would say they haven’t seen us argue; it’s true when we’re alone as well. When we do have a falling out, it lasts a matter of minutes because we’re so anxious to patch things up and enjoy our time together.

How he proposed

On a sunny day, in an outdoor setting surrounded by mountains, flowers and Chihuly glass sculptures. He really knows how to make me feel special.

The engagement ring

I knew I wanted a unique ring which I would cherish forever. I left it up to Adi to make the final call since he has impeccable taste. Lucky for me, he choose my favourite shape, a pear and personalised the band with the help of a jeweller. I receive compliments every time I wear it.

What marriage means to us

Love is the foundation upon which we are building our marriage. Our marriage is a partnership in which we encourage each other to be the best version of ourselves. The more we give, the more we get.

The Details

Wedding Planning

We only had two months between the time we began planning our wedding and our wedding date! I never dreamt about the big day because I thought it was silly to plan so much in advance, but in the end, it was as though I had my dream wedding planned for years.

LOCATION & VENUE: I chose Udaipur because I have a deep connection with my Indian roots and although I’m not from there, I love Rajasthan out of all the places I’ve visited in India. We held our wedding events at Hotel Fateh Garh in Udaipur. The venue is set above the city of lakes amongst the longest mountain range in the world, the Aravallis, and offers exemplary views and service

PHOTOGRAPHY: We found our photographer, Joseph Augstein of One for the Book, through bisouNYC. Joseph is incredible. He is hardworking and passionate and our photographs are reflective of that. We shot in many different settings and Joseph was able to capture all our special moments beautifully. Prior to our wedding, I sent him a mood board on Pinterest of the type of shots we were looking for and he studied and executed them like the pro he is. Adi and I enjoyed every single moment we spent with Joseph and will surely work with him again in the future.

Wedding Events

We got married in Udaipur over the course of two days in March 2015, during the holi season:

  1. Mehendi – PM, Hotel Fateh Garh, Udaipur, 50 ppl.
  2. Wedding Ceremony – AM, Hotel Fateh Garh, Udaipur, 50 ppl.
  3. Reception – PM, Hotel Fateh Garh, Udaipur, 50 ppl.

The Mehendi event was magical. It began with the women from our family seated around me in the courtyard by the pool, getting their mehendi done. Native Rajasthani dancers performed folk dances and invited us to dance with them to traditional Gujarati garba and raas music. The dancers then performed with pots on their heads with fire blazing out of them. The guests were served mainly. traditional Indian food with some special requests for Gujarati dishes, as well as Italian and East Asian dishes (catered by the venue). Towards the end of the evening, one of the staff members brought out an industrial-sized telescope to show us the starlit evening while the men watched and engulfed “the tastiest tandoori chicken” they’ve ever had.

HIGHLIGHTS: One of my favorite moments was watching a breathtakingly large red moon rise slowly to hover over the city of lakes while Adi stood in front of it to watch me get my Mehendi done. Our photographer, Joseph did a wonderful job capturing this moment from my viewpoint.

DECOR: We had a traditional Rajasthani theme. The venue was adorned in marigolds and plates of colorful flower arrangements. Like the sunset, lights were entwined in the trees and candles were set around the pool area. Hotel Fate Garh provided all the decor.

Mehendi Look

PUJA’S OUTFIT: My look was simple and traditional. Orange looks great on my skin and this lehenga had a beautiful ombré effect which was perfect for what I needed. I found my outfit through the bridal services offered by bisouNYC.

JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES: All my jewelry was styled by and sourced through the bridal team at bisouNYC.

SHOES: I got a great deal on my shoes from Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW).

HAIR & MAKEUP: Susmita of Style by Susmita is someone I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with for many years. Susmita is a perfectionist and a woman with a vision. She went above and beyond her scope and delivered amazing results. My hair and makeup were definitely on point!

ADITYO’S OUTFIT: I wanted Adi to look as simple as I did but there was no mistaking he was the groom. He was dressed in an all-white raw silk kurta with a textured vest and a red rose in his left pocket. He looked dashing and received compliments all night.

SHOES & ACCESSORIES: We ventured out to the Udaipur markets and found Adi a pair of chappals that matched his outfit perfectly. Red rose flower pin.

Wedding Ceremony

Our wedding took place in the evening, just before sunset. Our mandap was set on the 4th outdoor level of the venue. Each level protrudes further out than the one above, facing Lake Pichola. Adi came with the baraat to the mandap and I met him there to exchange garlands. Our ceremony was performed in Rajasthani tradition since the pandits were locals. Guests were treated to traditional Indian food afterward. Guests were given colourful elephant luggage tags from Amazon as favours.

HIGHLIGHTS: I felt very calm and at peace during the Wedding Ceremony and vividly remember the pandit speaking in Hindi while I translated it to Adi. The entire ceremony was very interactive and had a great vibe.

DECOR: Traditional theme. The decor was the same for all the events with the addition of the mandap for the wedding ceremony. Our mandap was adorned in flowers imported from Thailand, and it was this type of accessibility and convenience that made us decide to get married in India.

Wedding Ceremony Look

PUJA’S OUTFIT: I went for a royal Rajasthani look. My outfit was by Anita Dongre and was sourced for me by bisouNYC.

JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES: All my jewellery was styled by and sourced through the bridal team at bisouNYC.

SHOES: Designer Shoe Warehouse.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Style by Susmita.

ADI’S OUTFIT:  Adi’s sherwani was a clean and simple cobalt blue paired with white raw silk churidar pants. Since I wore white, I thought the blue would stand out nicely. The outfit was sourced through bisouNYC.

SHOES: Blue jean TOMS which worked really well with the outfit.

Post-Wedding Shoot

We also made the most of being in Rajasthan with a few post-wedding photoshoots:

  • The Holi Photoshoot: We had scheduled a Holi photoshoot for sunrise on the day we were leaving for our honeymoon, and our family members joined in and gave us one more moment to cherish forever.
  • The Jaipur Photoshoot: Joseph and Style by Susmita accompanied us to Jaipur after the wedding for a photo shoot. The beautiful shots were taken at the ITC Rajputana, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar (a UNESCO world heritage site) and the local markets of Jaipur.

We traveled to a few different places for our honeymoon.

In India, we started off by traveling east from Udaipur to Jaipur, where we stayed at the ITC Rajputana Jaipur, and then went on to Agra, Delhi, and Simla. We stayed at the Wildflower Hall Shimla which had amazing service! The weather was phenomenal and the view of the mountains was breathtaking. Monkeys would come to our balcony each morning and we would feed them fruit. We also got the house chef to organize a private candlelit dinner for us while they showed photos of our wedding events.

In Thailand, we traveled from India to Phuket and then to Bangkok. Phuket was a nice change from our travels in India as we both love the beach. During the day, we would take advantage of the traditional Thai massages on the beach and enjoy refreshing fruit juices made to order. In the evenings, the scene changed to a club-like environment where the restaurants opened up to the beach and played dance music. Finally, we arrived in Bangkok where Adi took me around the city and showed me all the nooks and corners hidden with something different and new. We had so much fun and we both cannot wait to revisit these cities again.

Tips For Brides-To-Be

  1. Plan ahead for each outfit in detail including the hairstyle, makeup (colors), jewelry, shoes, and of course the outfit. bisouNYC offers personalized bridal services which are great for brides who don’t know where to begin.
  2. Be mindful of entertainment for the guests.
  3. Stop and take it all in every chance you get. A friend gave me this advice and I’m very appreciative of it because time flies and it’s all over before you know it. I wish I could do it all over again.
